SURROGACY IN THE UK

  • People using the services of a surrogate are not allowed to pay their surrogate in the UK. However, they are expected to reimburse reasonable expenses such as maternity clothes, travel expenses, and lost wages.

  • People using a surrogate do need to pay for the services incurred at the clinic such as the costs of intrauterine insemination (IU) if using the surrogate’s own eggs or in vitro fertilization (IVF) if using donor eggs and sperm.

  • In the UK, the surrogate is the legal mother of the child unless you get issued a parental order from the court. After that step is taken, your surrogate will no longer have parental rights. Surrogacy is a complicated legal matter so the use of an independent lawyer is highly encouraged.
