ADOPTION IN THE UK

Same-sex adoption was legalized in the UK in 2005 with the passing of the Adoption and Children Act 2002. There are three major steps in the adoption process after the potential adopter submits a registration-of-interest form with an adoption agency.

1 – Checks, Forms, and Preparation

  • Potential adopters will complete basic background checks, a criminal records check, medical exam, and general references.

  • They will also complete a self-assessment form that gives a general overview of their lives up to this point including work history, life philosophy, major values, childhood experiences, etc.

2 – Assessment and Panel

  • If the adopter makes it to the second stage, they move on to meeting with a social worker who will help assess the strength of the applicants. The social worker will then present their findings to the Adoption Panel.

  • The Adoption Panel, made up of a variety of independent experts, will go over the social worker’s report and often meet with the applicants.

3 – Family Finding and Placement

  • After being approved by the Adoption Panel, the adoption agency will work with local authorities to find the best child for the adopters.

  • A matching panel will make the final decision on the child best suited for the adopters and a social worker will help the child/children and adopters adjust to their new lives.
